Constructing a Model of a Conceptual Building

Constructing a Model of a Conceptual Building

This assignment was for our Architectural philosophy class. The goal of this project was to explore the concept of "barrier" and what it means. My design was for a tower which would contain a library and a water tower below it. On the roof of the tower was a reflecting pool surrounding a center observation post. The entrance to the tower would also be designed to blend into the surrounding desert rocks so the building would have no obvious point of entry.

Normally architectural models are made from wood or paper board, but because of the setting and appearance I decided to try doing mine in clay with a styrofoam core. First a template was made using the scale drawings I had designed. The clay I used was actually a type of rubberized Plasticine and was probably a little softer than was needed for the level of detail needed in an architectural model. One way I tried to fix this was by putting the model in the fridge after I had the rough form ready, this made it easier to detail.
