CHARME Internship Repointing Work

CHARME Internship Repointing Work

After the walls had been rebuilt for our section, I would join Roland on the scaffold for this portion of the internship and work on re pointing the work from the other side of the wall. Because of the prominence and permanence of this work the pointing had to be done slowly and carefully and methodically to make sure not to smudge the stone with excess mortar. We used special brushes always going with the joints of stone never against the joints, as the style of this project was to be clean. after re-brushing several times it would give a clean result.

To work most efficiently we would sometimes split to different levels of the scaffold so we had more room.

The section of wall we were working on. It was highly visible so it was very important to be clean with our workmanship.

Roland at work cleaning out the old mortar. The wall had been damaged due to Ivy overgrowth. All traces of Ivy roots had to be removed and cleaned from the joints. When possible we were to avoid removing stones that were still stable.

The key to this work was patience and attention to detail
